When anyone mentions Kyoto, the image that most often comes to mind associated with the ancient capital city would probably be historical temples/shrines, picturesque zen gardens, post-card worthy landscapes, quaint machiya back-alleys, etc. But despite the city’s thousand years’ history and traditions, Kyoto in modern times does in fact still has brick and mortar buildings, and of course its fair share of Westernised influences.
Just recently, a quaint little hole-in-wall Victorian-style cafe was introduced in one of the episodes of the anime series “Holmes at Kyoto Teramachi-Sanjo“. This set a few fans in action as they seek out the location of said cafe – “Angel Library”. Their hard work did not go in vain because they not only found the cafe – which is indeed as portrayed in the anime, housed at the basement level of the boutique chocolatier “Cacao Market“. One of them posted the pictures of her little ‘adventure’ on her personal twitter account and the tweet was so popular it was liked nearly 150,000 times and shared in retweets nearly 50,000 times since it was published!
We contacted this particular fan and received permission to share her pictures of “Cacao Market” and “Angel Library” with our readers – with side-by-side screencaps of scenes as they appeared in the anime episode.
Here’s also some bonus photos of the food and beverages served in the cafe.
Chocolatier “Cacao Market” and its quaint underground cafe “Angel Library” is located in the heart of Kyoto’s busy Sanjo-district. Readers who happen to be visiting the ancient city and who are interested should use the chance to check out the place – their website even provide a simple access map (by Google Maps).
