Announced back in April, the first key visual and trailer for the film adaptation of the comedy manga series “Tonde Saitama” has finally been released! Hitting Japanese cinemas on 22nd February 2019, and starring Japanese rock star GACKT and popular actress Fumi Nikaido in the lead roles, the film’s very first official poster is actually a formal apology to the people of Saitama ((●≧艸≦)
For those unfamilair with the reference, it is conventional wisdom that for residents in Japan’s Kantou region — which include Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama, Tokyo, Chiba, and Kanagawa, they consider people from Saitama to be the most uncool and should be shunned at all costs. This is especially true of the residents from the glitzy capital of Tokyo, so to pre-empt any anger and embarrassment for their portrayal of the fine folks of Saitama, the film’s production have released an official apology!
“Tonde Saitama” is a classic romance comedy by Mineo Maya. The story centres on high school student Momomi Dannoura — the student council president at Tokyo’s prestigious Hokuhodo Academy, whose father is also the governor of Tokyo. When a mysterious transfer student named Rei Asami enters Hokuhodo after having spent time overseas, Momomi is smitten. However, because Rei lives in Saitama, their relationship is doomed from the start. The couple then try start a revolution to free Saitama from its Tokyo oppresors and live happily ever after.
BTW, Momomi is a boy. Check out the first trailer below!
