José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda is officially recognized as the National Hero of the Philippines. An ophthalmologist by education and a polyglot by interest, Rizal became a novelist and penned two of the country’s most treasured works: “Noli Mi Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo”, which inspired the fight for independence against the Spanish Colonial Government. The Philippines declared its independence from the Spanish on 12th June 1898.

Joze Rizal is also the inspiration for Tekken 7 playable character Josie Rizal, who not only wears a modernized version of the traditional Filipino attire “baro’t saya”, but also fights with a Filipino-style martial art called “eskrima”. Her introduction to the Tekken series was met with controversy, after both Filipino and foreign gamers accused developers that her character design was both sexist and racist.
