  • Sony to stop production of physical PS Vita games

Sony recently sent a message to hardware developers that they’re now ending the production of physical PlayStation Vita game copies. This move marks the end of physical cards for the portable console. However, Sony says that “digital distribution will continue”.

Sony also said that they “plan to end all Vita GameCard production by close of fiscal year 2018,” for their European and North American branches. They also asked them to submit all Vita product code requests by 28th June 2018. Sony also told developers that they must enter final purchase orders before 15th February 2019.

This doesn’t mark the end of the console’s run though, as Sony will still continue to distribute games digitally. This means that the PlayStation Store will continue selling digital downloads for various PS Vita games.

The console has been struggling in sales since its launch, especially with the rising popularity of mobile games. The popularity of Nintendo’s 3DS, as well as Switch, also contributed to lackluster sales. However, it’s still a majorly popular console among anime fans, as it features several anime-based games. But with more and more mobile games featuring anime-related content, the future looks grim for this gaming platform.
