  • Arashiyama’s Famed Bamboo Grove Vandalised by Tourists

Today, on why we can’t have nice things: the beautiful bamboo grove in Kyoto’s famed Arashiyama district is under siege as disrespectful visitors carve their names and initials on the delicate bamboo trees, the Japan Times reports.

In the interview video shown above, an employee of the Ebisuya Head Office — the company in charge of managing the forest, said that even healthy trees could suffer from rot because of the cuts made on its body, and the forest managers would be forced to cut it down.

At least one hundred trees were damaged, with many of the carvings written in foreign languages (non-Japanese). A local official has been quoted as saying that the sharp rise in vandalism cases this year started in spring, which is historically the busiest tourist season in Japan.
