fhána is a 4-member music group consisting of music producers Junichi Satou, yuxuki waga, kevin mitsunaga, and vocalist towana. Besides producing music, fhána also actively does live performances all over Japan, as well as overseas. We’re very happy they took the time from their busy schedule to tell us at WOW Japan a little bit more about themselves!

Will this be your first time in Indonesia? What is your image of the country?

Junichi Sato: I have been on a trip to Bali; the sea was very beautiful. But this is my first time to Jakarta, and it has a lively image. Also,my image of Gamelan music is quite strong, and I am interested in it.

towana: It is my first time to go to Indonesia. I am interested in visiting historical temples. I am also looking forward to the food!

kevin mitsunaga: It is my first time to go to Indonesia. I imagine it’s a powerful place filled with lots of people.

yuxuki waga: Both the people and the climate is very hot.

How did you come together as a group?

Junichi Sato: All the male members were engaged in different music-related activities. We got acquainted over the internet, and our interest in music fitted nicely into our shared interest in anime and games, so we formed a band while in a maid cafe. In the beginning we used to invite a guest vocalist based on the songs, and towana participated in one of the songs we released prior to our debut — which we thought was wonderful. So we asked her to be an official member, and it’s been the four of us ever since.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration and why?

Junichi Sato: I am influenced by and my goal is to become like Ryuichi Sakamoto. He loves music, and hae has been active in a wide range of genres from pop music to movie soundtracks, and has established a high standard not just in Japan but also all over the world. I am also influenced by artists like YMO, Kenji Ozawa, Cornelius, and many others.

towana: Hikaru Utada. I want to be able to write lyrics that express my thoughts by myself. I am also find stage performances of Japanese idols very helpful as well.

kevin mitsunaga: I was influenced by artists such as Cornelius, Kururi, Yuuri Miyauchi, and Pogo. I think I am where I am today becuase I discovered their music as a student and got the shock of my life.

yuxuki waga: Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood influenced my the guitar playing style, and all the music I listened to at that time, but recently I like The 1975, Ásgeir, and Snarky Puppy.

Tell us something interesting about the band – for example, during concerts who is the most relaxed? Who is the most nervous? What was the most memorable bouquet or banner you received during a concert?

I think all four of us are all nervous. Before we go onstage, we go around in circles to sync our energies. We’ve received a lot of memorable fan letters and fan art. We’re very happy to get them and we cherish them a lot, because the fans gave a lot of time and effort to make them for us.

Please give a message to your fans in Indonesia.

Junichi Sato: It’s fhána’s first time in Indonesia. We’re looking forward to seeing you all!

towana: See you all in Indonesia very soon! Let’s have a great time!

kevin mitsunaga: We won’t lose to the hot climate of Jakarta — we’ll challenge it with all of fhána’s power so let’s have fun together!

yuxuki mitsunaga: I am looking forward to an enjoyable time with the music, beyond barriers in culture and language.
