  • Police arrest man for threatening Sumire Uesaka, her agency releases a statement

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested 20-year-old college student, Tatsuya Onodera. This is because the man posted threats to kill seiyuu Sumire “Sumipe” Uesaka online. They arrested him in the Hiyoridamachi area of Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, and he then admitted to posting the threats.

In 2 Channel, Onodera allegedly posted about 20 threats to Sumipe online. Police also reported that he said that he will “Definitely kill her” on the Japanese messaging board back in June. They also reported that Onodera himself is a huge Sumire Uesaka fan.

The threats prompted Sumipe’s agency, Spacecraft Entertainment , to hold meetings to respond to them. They even went as far as to hire a guard for her, and also filed a report earlier this month. After Onodera’s arrest, the agency then posted a statement on Sumipe’s blog. There, they thanked all the fans for their support. They also reaffirmed their commitment to addressing these threats. They thanked the Tokyo Metropolitan Police for handling the case swiftly as well.

For her part, Sumipe seems to be OK as Onodera only posted threats and never really attacked her. However, the same cannot be said for other celebrities who received death threats. The reason why Japanese agencies take these threats seriously is because crazed fans often attack celebrities after posting threats online. This includes the case for Mayu Tomita. A crazed stalker stabbed her and left her hospitalised. Thankfully, this didn’t happen to Sumipe, as her fans tend to know a thing or two about handling guns…
