One of history’s longest-running manga series has finally come to an end after a 40-year run, as we finally bid farewell to Osamu Akimoto’s “Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kouen Mae Hashutsujo,” or more commonly known as KochiKame.
However, KochiKame is ending on a high note, as the manga has set the World Record for “Most volumes published for a single manga series” with 200 volumes, as noted by the Guinness Book of World Records. The 200th and final volume is being slated to be released in Japan on 17th September, with the cover fittingly displaying the characters as if they are waving goodbye.
The series is considered as Weekly Shonen Jump! magazine’s longest-running series, and it has outlasted some of the magazine’s most popular titles in its 40-year serialization run, including Naruto, Dragon Ball, Bleach, Nisekoi, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Kuroko’s Basketball. It has inspired several anime adaptations, a live-action movie, drama, and a stage play.
So for 40 years, thank you Osamu Akimoto-sensei for a wonderful series, and congratulations on your Guinness World Record!
