Japanese animation filmmaker, Makoto Shinkai, is one of the most recognizable names in the animation industry around the world. The famous anime director has shown his worldwide appeal as his latest work “your name.” will be distributed in 85 countries and regions.
The announcement was revealed during a stage greeting from the anime’s staff last 28th August, though the film already made its world premiere during last July’s Anime Expo 2016 in Los Angeles, California. However, the full list of these 85 countries and regions have not yet been announced as of writing.
Best known for beautifully animated works like Voices of a Distant Star, The Garden of Words, and 5 Centimeters Per Second, Makoto Shinkai has made a name for himself with animated feature films. Kimi No Na Wa. will be the 42-year old director’s first new work since his critically-acclaimed Garden of Words. The film promises to be a “tale of love and miracles”, which will bring together Mitsuha Miyamizu, a girl living in a rural mountain area with her father, sister, and grandmother, and Taki Tachibana, a boy living in the bustling city streets of Tokyo. The two have never met, but have become connected by a dream of one another.
Last year, Shinkai announced that he was working on a new film, and a year later, this is what he was working on. But he won’t be alone in this stunning new film, as Masashi Ando, who has worked on Ghibli films such as Spirited Away and When Marnie Was There, will be serving as his animation director, with AnoHana’s Masayoshi Tanaka doing the character designs. It is scheduled to hit cinemas in Japan starting 26 August 2016.
