• Hige’s Akiba (アキバのヒゲ) – 04/05/2015

Welcome back to the Monday edition of Hige’s Akiba! While trying to find something to keep myself entertained during this long holiday, I met some friends and watch them play some card games like Weiss Schwartz and Magic The Gathering! Was pretty fun but anyways, let’s see what’s around Akihabara today. As many of you know, Kantai Collection has become immensely popular and it has all sorts of goods out lately. One long running plastic model series also have been ganing popularity as well. Tamiya’s Japanese ship model lines!

As you can see, the outer packaging of the ship models are now using the Kancolle shipgirls instead! I think it’s pretty good that they’re using the game models to get people to appreciate the original ships more actually…and also makes for a pretty good marketing strategy. I kinda want to buy one too!

I used to build Bertram boats years back in melbourne, making the teak cabinets and doors etc. My grandfather was a north sea mariner from Skye in scotland and I grew up with the smell of salt air in my lungs and the sound of the sea washing against the shore 30 mtrs away. I like boats 🙂

My underground studio is based on the twin hull design of boats and the various bulkheads etc to manage damage, an underground boat … 🙂

My childhood home was at a beach my grandmother said was like were she grew up in Bergen Norway 1880 a calm bay with distant mountians the other side where the sun would set

My grand parents met when my grandfather was sailing the trade routes from northern Ireland to Bergen and the north. He would have 2-3 overnight stays at Bergen a week to see my grandmother. They came to Melbourne as a young married couple just before the nazi’s arrived 1910/11. The family lands in the north had already been seized.

They never wanted to talk about it in front of little kids. They wanted a fresh start, just treat others as new people, but if they were nazi’s they’d say, ‘They’re not very nice people’ and the adults would frown or smile knowingly, thinking little kids like me didn’t notice 🙂
