The movie opened on 457 screens across Japan, and sold approximately over 494,170 tickets. The movie earned two times more than Hosoda’s previous film, Wolf Children, which earned 360,372,690 yen and opened at #2 in the box office. Set between the human world and the bakemono realm known as Juutengai, it follows a human boy named Kyuuta who gets trained by the bear-like bakemono named Kumatetsu after he somehow gets lost in Juutengai.

The Boy and the Beast will be the latest anime movie added to Mamoru Hosoda’s already-impressive repertoire, which already includes classics like Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leaped Through Time, and Summer Wars. The movie is both written and directed by Hosoda himself, and he also created the movie’s concept.
